What documentation is required to rent a 4x4?
You must be 21+ with a valid passport, a valid driver’s licence from your country of origin, and any visa required for Tanzania. We also recommend an International Driving Permit. Additional drivers must be named and must meet the same requirements.
What are the road rules and speed limits in Tanzania?
Tanzania drives on the left. Always obey posted speed limits, slow down in villages, and watch for speed humps, livestock, pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife. Inside parks, drive slowly and follow ranger instructions.
At handover, we brief you on practical road etiquette, park guidance, daylight driving, and route timing.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
We recommend carrying an International Driving Permit together with your original driving licence. It can make police checks and cross-border paperwork easier, especially if your licence is not in English.
What is covered by the insurance?
Standard cover is local third-party liability, which covers damage to third parties only. Vehicle damage, accessories, tyres, glass, underbody damage, recovery costs, and negligence-related damage may not be covered. We strongly recommend discussing comprehensive cover and excess terms before confirming.
How much is the security deposit?
A USD 1,000 security deposit is usually required and is taken alongside your rental payment. It is released after vehicle return inspection, subject to vehicle condition, fuel, equipment, and insurance terms.
How do I pay for the rental and deposit?
Payment options are confirmed during quotation. Credit card is preferred for deposits where available. We will provide payment instructions, due dates, cancellation terms, and any applicable fees before confirmation.
Can I collect or drop off the car somewhere else?
Yes. One-way rentals are possible with advance booking. Depending on the collection or drop-off point, a repositioning fee may apply. We quote this clearly before confirmation.
Can I cross an international border?
Yes, but only with written authorization from Eagle Overland and any required additional insurance or permits. Tell us your intended route early so we can prepare paperwork and advise on border procedures.
What should I know about fuel, payments, and cash?
Major towns usually have reliable fuel, but remote routes require planning. Carry some cash in local currency and USD, because cards are not accepted everywhere. We help plan sensible fuel stops based on your route.
What vehicle is best for self-drive in Tanzania?
A high-clearance 4x4 is essential. Our fleet focuses on Land Cruiser and Hilux builds with off-road tyres, dual battery, inverter, fridge, compressor, recovery kit, tools, spares, and route support.
Do the vehicles include rooftop tents and camping gear?
Selected vehicles include rooftop tents, bedding, chairs, table, kitchen equipment, fridge or freezer, lighting, recovery kit, compressor, and basic tools. Your exact kit list is confirmed with your quote and at handover.
Is there a mileage limit per day?
We do not usually impose a daily mileage limit, but drive times must still be realistic. Tanzania routes can be slower than they look on maps, especially on gravel, park roads, and remote sections.
What happens if I have a breakdown or puncture?
Contact our support team by phone or WhatsApp. Vehicles include spares, basic tools, and a compressor. We will guide you step by step and coordinate assistance or replacement support where required.
Is self-drive in Tanzania safe?
Yes, self-drive can be safe and rewarding when you follow road rules, park rules, daylight driving guidance, and our briefing. We help you plan realistic routes and provide support while you are on the road.
Is it safe to drive in wildlife areas?
Yes, but you must drive slowly, stay in your vehicle unless you are in a designated safe area, keep distance from wildlife, never feed animals, and follow ranger instructions at all times.
Can I drive at night?
We strongly discourage night driving, especially between parks, in rural areas, or on remote roads. Wildlife, livestock, pedestrians, poor lighting, and road conditions make night driving risky.
What should I pack for a self-drive safari?
Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, hat, layers for changing temperatures, headlamp, power bank, camera, binoculars, water bottle, snacks, personal medication, and soft luggage. We provide the main vehicle and camping equipment depending on your setup.
How do I navigate and find good wildlife spots?
We can provide GPX or KML route support, offline map guidance, fuel-stop planning, and route briefings. Early morning and late afternoon are often the best wildlife viewing times. Rangers and lodge teams can also provide useful local updates.
Can you provide child seats or special gear?
Yes. Child seats, extra tents, extra coolers, satellite communicators, camera bean bags, and other add-ons may be available on request. Mention your needs early so we can confirm availability.
Can I fly a drone in parks?
Drones are usually restricted or prohibited in Tanzanian parks without special permits. Always ask in advance. Unauthorized drone use can lead to fines, confiscation, and problems with park authorities.
